Door handles may seem like something minor, but if you dislike the style or design of them, or are finding them difficult to use, it's worth replacing them. Installing a new door handle is simple if you've got patience.

Modern door handles are usually equipped with cover plates that hide the screws for an attractive look. If your new handle doesn't have them already connected, you'll have to attach them separately.

Remove the old handle

Door handles are not only an important aesthetic addition to your home but they're also crucial for safety as they allow you to lock and unlock your door. If your current latch plate has rectangular, swap it out for the round one so that the latch hooks onto the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle easier to use.

The first step is to remove the screw that holds the latch plate in place. The screws are often quite tight and require a fair amount of force to loosen them. It may be helpful to have a second person assist with this task if you can.

Once the screws are removed and the latch plate should pull out of the door easily. If the latch plate is stuck or doesn't move use a small file to scrape the edges. This can sometimes open the plate up.

You can now move on to making the new door strike plate for installation. Utilizing the wood screws that came with your new handles, screw the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this could damage the strike plate.

If you're not sure if the latch plate is in the correct position, try closing and then opening the door to determine whether it latches and closes correctly. If it doesn't then you'll have to adjust the strike plate up or down, or move it forward or back until the door closes and latches correctly.

If the door still moves or jiggles, you might have to enlarge your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more prevalent on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear hinges that aren't small, a incorrect size of the latch or damaged strike plate. If this is the situation, follow the same procedure to adjust the strike plate, but using a metal file instead of an hammer and chisel.

Removal of the Latch

The latch is a curved metal piece that slides into and out of a hole on the inside of your door. The latch moves forward when you turn the handle. It also connects to an opening in the frame of the door to keep the door closed. If your door shakes when you close it, changing the latch may be all that's needed to fix it.

The screws that hold the door latch are difficult to see, but you can usually insert a screwdriver into a small hole on the trim plate, and then pull the latch off. After taking off the trim plate you should be able to remove the latch and the bolts that hold it and the spindle that holds it.

If the latch won't be released, try using an old-fashioned paper clip or tool to free it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the recessed slot of the latch and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel the handle and latch begin to separate. You may have to do this several times before the latch becomes loose enough to allow it to be pulled out.

You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without issues once you have removed the old one. Use the new screws to secure the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is correctly placed in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.

Measure the existing backset (the distance between the centre of the large hole on the front of the door and the edge) before installing the new handle. You should also check that the latch size on the new handle matches this measurement.

You'll need a new lock cylinder if you're replacing the handle and latch, or your old one is damaged. If you are not changing locks, a new lock should fit in your existing recess and will work with the keys you have already. Take off the cover plate
